BP Hauls in $7.7 Billion in Profits, Gulf... →
socialismartnature:
Capitalism sucks. In a sane world, the private property rights of the BP executives and shareholders would be immediately rendered null and void, and all of BP’s profits would be seized and used to fund income compensation and healthcare costs of Gulf Coast residents, as well as full and total ecological clean-up efforts for the region’s plant and wildlife.

As pressure mounts over Iran’s nuclear program, a top Iranian general warned Tuesday that the nation will pre-emptively strike anyone who threatens it.
The statement by Gen. Mohammed Hejazi continues the defiant tone Tehran has taken in its confrontation with Western countries that claim it is developing nuclear weapons. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

Independent of my first-world despair at turning twenty next year, my roommate mentioned it and we decided to make a couple of lists. On mine I could only figure out a few things that I really wanted to do, in particular:
Read every published work by Camus and Sartre
Write a novel
Otherwise, with just writing a lot more in general, I don’t know what else I want to do but me and my...

Interesting: Death Star Construction Costs →

Economics blog Centives devoted a recent post to one of the most important questions facing the global marketplace today: how much would it cost to build a Death Star?
Basing their calculations on the density of a modern warship, they estimate that the first Death Star…
I feel weak, and whenever I go to eat anything I just feel ill. I know this is a consequence of my diet; not becoming a vegan, but being a lazy shit who’d sooner stay in and eat toast for a week rather than go to Asda and take his time to cook something. Nonetheless, I’ll probably continue as I am until the first, when I initially planned to stop after a month.

I was bored, and wanted to watch Midnight in Paris, so I bought a subscription to Love Film, watched it, then watched Taxi Driver and it’s well worth the £4.99 a month. Now I’m going to avoid going to Asda by eating toast and watching another film.
Tolstoj on Self-Ownership →
anticapitalist:
This is a very interesting read, because his description of self-ownership is not the laughable “everything is voluntary’ idea of self-ownership that capitalists argue in favor of.

Monsanto's Roundup Found in People's Urine →
A recent study conducted by a German university found very high concentrations of Glyphosate, a carcinogenic chemical found in herbicides like Monsanto’s Roundup, in all urine samples tested. The amount of glyphosate found in the urine was staggering, with each sample containing concentrations at 5 to 20-fold the limit established for drinking water. This is just one more piece of evidence that...

One of our flatmates has come to the conclusion that us being too lazy to clean our dishes was a personal attack on her, so she cleaned them and now she’s pissed off. But thanks for cleaning my two mugs and frying pan, taking a photo and tagging us all in it on Facebook. I’m really not mad at her, I just think how she’s acting is quite immature and what few, out of the way,...

I haven’t eaten any animal products for seventeen days which is good, and neither have I eaten any meat for almost six months which is especially good. People are still confused when I tell them that I willingly abstain from any animal products, so, as to not dishearten anyone in the conversation, I usually tell them that I do it just to see if I can and that tends to be believable enough to...
